In 1990, a Canadian TV channel called Citytv launched an unusual little experiment: They created a video booth in which anyone from the public could enter and record a message. The best of the recorded messages would air on a weekly TV show, called “Speakers Corner.”
A year later, a band called the Barenaked Ladies popped into the booth. “Hi, we’re Barenaked Ladies, and we’re a little too cheap to make our own video,” said Steven Page, one of the lead singers of the band. “So here you go.” Then the band, smushed into the booth, broke into the song “Be My Yoko Ono.”
What happened next? The video became their first music video, and the song became their first charting hit up in Canada.
And they did it all on a song recorded in a tiny booth in an office building in Toronto.
When you have an idea, you can wait and try to make something perfect — or you can try to get it out into the world as soon as you can.
Always, always do the latter.
